Jonathan Marchessault calls out the Golden Knights

Is the 2023 Conn Smythe Trophy winner finished in Vegas?

He's one of the original misfits, happens to be the reigning Conn Smythe Trophy winner, and is also slated to become an unrestricted free agent at this season's end.

Vegas Golden Knights forward Jonathan Marchessault enjoyed the best season of his career in 2023-24, establishing a new career high in goals scored, and is set for a considerable raise from his cap hit of $5 million. Unfortunately for him and his teammates, they were unable to defend their Stanley Cup title from last year, falling to the Dallas Stars in a hard-fought seven game series in Round 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

And based on the latest comments from Marchessault, it doesn't appear as though he is any closer to an extension with Vegas.

“We don't have a call yet or anything,” Marschessault explained prior to taking part in the World Series of Poker. “They said they were interested to sign me. They have time until June 30 or so.”

“I asked last summer,” Marchessault said about requesting an extension. “I said I would rather do it in the summer before the season. They said they're not ready to do that, and after there's not even a single talk that I've had during the season. I don't know. Technically, as an organization, you've signed a player for six years, right? So you have the full six years and after you can deal with it, so we'll see.”

Meanwhile, Marchessault voiced his belief that the Golden Knights and Stars were going to be one of the last two teams standing in the Western Conference, and now that the Stars are two wins away from the Stanley Cup Final, that they'll be going all the way.

“I still think us and Dallas were the two best teams in the West and the winner of that series was going to make it to the finals,” Marchessault said. “I don't think the other teams in the conference were near our two teams. I think Dallas is going to make it to the finals, and personally I think they're going to win.”

It would be odd to see Marchessault don the jersey of another team, but as Vegas has proven before, they are absolutely ruthless when it comes to player and coaching personnel; nothing is off the table.
