When the Calgary Flames named Ryan Huska as their new head coach, the bench boss quickly discussed his approach to offence for 2023-24 in order to give his best players like Jonathan Huberdeau the trust and freedom to use their talent to perform at their best.

“My knowledge of the players, I think that’s a really important thing,” said Huska, a Flames assistant coach for two seasons, per Sportsnet.

“It’s a positive when I have a relationship with them already, and there isn’t that phase where we have to figure things out.

“We’re going to create an environment where the players are going to have every opportunity to grow and succeed.”

While the departure of Darryl Sutter and Huska’s attitude setting the tone in Calgary should have convinced fans that Huberdeau will have a new found swagger as a Flame next season, on Tuesday, there were still emerging rumours on his desire to possibly be traded. Eklund’s Hockey Buzz points to the speculation that, with Huberdeau’s no movement clause kicking in July 1, the star forward might be tempted to move elsewhere after a disastrous first season in Calgary. Eklund hints at the Arizona Coyotes, Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators, whose new head coach Andrew Brunette could look to work with Huberdeau once again.

“I wrote about this previously but I keep hearing more and more that his no movement clause kicks in July 1. I know there’s serious interest from Arizona who is looking to do something like this to gain some respect ability. Calgary has their eye a few players including Ryan O’Reilly. Montreal also has interest in Huberdeau….and Brunette in Nashville is obviously very familiar with Jonathan from Florida…”

Now, I feel like Huberdeau would like to stay put in Calgary despite having a rough first year with the Flames, who offered him a huge contract that kicks in this summer. I say Huberdeau will indeed get his swagger back and I believe it comes in Calgary.

But, you can’t blame anyone from looking at all the options, including Huberdeau…
