Jonathan Huberdeau takes a shot at Darryl Sutter.
There's no question who this came from.
Not all is well in the Calgary Flames locker room it would seem.
Earlier this week notoriously outspoken National Hockey League player agent Allan Walsh dropped a bit of a bombshell on the Calgary Flames when he sent a less than flattering tweet directed at the organization. In the tweet Walsh implied that the team was bordering on insanity and that it was bringing far too much negativity onto its players, all of this done of course without naming any names.
"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result," wrote Walsh on Twitter while tagging the Flames. "Also, negativity sucks the joy right out of players."
Many were quick to suspect that the comments, although made by Walsh, were actually coming from Calgary Flames star forward Jonathan Huberdeau. Huberdeau, who is represented by Walsh, would ostensibly have been directing the criticism at Flames head coach Darryl Sutter, but when he was asked about the tweet from his agent Huberdeau has denied any knowledge.
"I woke up this morning and saw that tweet," claimed Huberdeau when asked about the tweet this week.
"It doesn’t come from me. It's my agent, but it’s from him. It doesn’t reflect on me or the guys. We all love each other… We are having fun."
Huberdeau also attempted to claim that he has a great friendship with the Flames head coach.
"Darryl is Darryl. Sometimes you like what the coach do(es). Some nights you don't like it," said Huberdeau. "You’re never 100% happy with the coach’s decision, but me and Darryl have a great connection, great friendship."
The only problem with Huberdeau's comments here are the fact that many fans aren't buying it, and I count myself among that number. There's simply no way an agent would send out something so inflammatory without the approval of his client, and NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has now confirmed as much.
Friedman was asked about the tweet from Walsh and he left little doubt about where things currently stand.
"First of all I think the one thing that you always have to remember is that Walsh has always maintained that he has never sent out a tweet like that without the approval of his client," said Friedman on the Jeff Marek Show. "That in every single one of those situations the client knows it's going to happen, that's the first thing I always think of."
Walsh has been involved in many of these social-media induced firestorms in the past and Friedman confirmed that in each of those situations the client was on board with the agent's decision, even specifically referencing the now infamous situation with Marc-Andre Fleury and the Las Vegas Golden Knights.
All this to say that Friedman believes that, although Walsh takes credit for it, that this was a shot not from the agent but directly from the player himself.
"On some level this is a shot, as much as Walsh puts his name on it, it's a shot from Huberdeau," said Friedman. "You have to think of it like that. I think we all know there's some problems out there."
I guess the only question now is, how long before we see a tweet that includes a giant sword with Sutter's name on it?
