Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau’s sister makes heart-wrenching post about their tragic deaths

A new year starts and, unfortunately, Katie Gaudreau shared this as her first publication of 2025:

On Jan. 1st, Katie Gaudreau, whose brothers Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau were killed by a drunk driver on the night before her wedding in August, shared her reflection of the past year, which she called the worst of her life. She shared a video compiling various moments from 2024 on her Instagram, and the caption linked to it is simply heart-wrenching:

“2024 I hate you,” Katie wrote in her caption. “You went from what should have been the best year of my life to the worst.

“You taught me that life is cruel and unfair. You made me feel so small and so lost but you didn’t get the best of me because I have come out stronger and wiser.”

She added that she’s “not sure how to feel” about 2025 just yet “because I don’t know how we leave 2024 like this.”

Katie has received a lot of support from the hockey community, with many comments sending love and prayers.

The brothers were struck and killed by a drunk driver while riding bikes in Oldmans Township, New Jersey, on August 29, on the eve of Katie’s wedding, where both brothers were to be groomsmen.

Johnny was 31 years old at the time of his death, while Matthew was 29. Meredith Gaudreau is pregnant with the couple’s third child as the couple shared daughter Noa and son Johnny. Matthew Gaudreau’s wife, Madeline, gave birth earlier this week to their child, the couple’s first, a son named Tripp.

I keep thinking of the Gaudreau family and sending out prayers to them. I hope the entire family keeps the presences of Matthew and Johnny during the new year.
