John Tortorella shares update on mystery injury to goalie Samuel Ersson.
The head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers spoke to the media on Saturday following the loss to the Bruins.
There was a strange situation that unfolded today as the Philadelphia Flyers welcomed the Boston Bruins to the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, one that has in fact left goaltender Samuel Ersson injured.
In a rather bizarre scenario, Ersson would pull himself out of the game on Saturday after just a little over 7 minutes of play had run off the clock in the very first period. It was impossible to pinpoint what had happened as the move from Ersson came after an extended stoppage in play due to a commercial break.
As the game returned from commercial and the National Hockey League's officials appeared poised to drop the puck on a faceoff, Ersson would skate over to a member of the Flyers' training staff to remove himself from the game. After some discussion between Ersson, the trainer, and an NHL official, Ersson simply left the game and was not seen from again.
That left a lot of questions about what exactly had transpired, but following the game Flyers head coach John Tortorella did in fact confirm that there was an injury at play.
"Lower body injury," confirmed Tortorella during his post game media availability.
Tortorella did however indicate that there was still a great many questions surrounding the situation, at least as far as he was concerned.
"Not sure, I haven't talked to the medical guys," said Tortorella when asked for more details.
Ersson has taken on the role of the Flyers number one goaltender this season having appeared in 9 of their 12 games thus far, so any injury is of course a big concern for a team that is off to a slow start with a record of 4-7-1. Details on the severity of the injury will likely have to wait however, with Tortorella himself claiming to still be in the dark about it.
