Jim Hiller officially explains controversial challenge in Game 3.
Jim Hiller attempts to explain the controversy that has everyone up in arms.
Oh boy this one is going to sting for a while.
On Friday night, the Los Angeles Kings and their fans witnessed a disaster unfold as an ill-timed coach's challenge from Kings head coach Jim Hiller not only handed Game 3 to the Edmonton Oilers on silver platter, but may very well have given them life in this series.
Following the game the question on the mind of every reporter was why the Kings had made the controversial decision to challenge, with Hiller offering the best explanation that he could.
"Well we got a look at it and took plenty of time and we felt it was goalie interference, so we challenged it," said Hiller.
Hiller, who has a very good record of challenges as the head coach of the Kings, acknowledged that this one didn't go his way.
"Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose on those," said Hiller.
He also acknowledged the significance of this particular challenge.
"Tonight we lost and it cost us big time, no other way around it," admitted Hiller.
Hillerf was also asked about challenging at that time and in that situation, which he admitted had factored into the decision.
"All of those things go into it. And that's why we take a time out, we understand the situation, we don't want to give them a power play, but clearly we felt that challenge was in our favor.," said Hiller.
"The league disagreed and we move on."
Hiller also pointed to the fact that the Kings could have killed off the ensuing power play but failed to do so.
"The next step would have been for us to kill the penalty and that didn't happen either," said a defiant Hiller.
That's tough but that's hockey, playoff hockey especially," acknowledged Hiller.
