The Winnipeg Jets host the New York Rangers on their home opener later tonight, however, it was just been confirmed by team reporter John Lu of TSN that head coach Rick Bowness will not be behind the bench.
Bowness has taken positive for COVID this afternoon.
“As a result, he will not be behind the bench tonight. Associate Coach Scott Arniel will assume head coaching duties in the interim.”
This is probably not the start the Jets, or Bowness, were hoping for.
Some fans will say this might be karma, seeing the decision made by the Jets on Thursday to keep beloved forward and former captain Blake Wheeler out of the leadership group.not only did they take the "C" away from Wheeler, but he won't even wear an "A" this season. The team announced today that it will NOT feature a captain this season and that Mark Scheifele, Josh Morrissey and Adam Lowry will all wear the "A" as Assistant Captains.
Here's a guy who has given absolutely everything to this franchise since moving from Atlanta back in 2011. He bleeds Winnipeg Jets hockey and he's been arguably the most consistent performer that the franchise has ever had.
The decision to change the leadership approach in Winnipeg came from Bowness and now he is the out, not Wheeler, out of the game on Friday. Just saying.
