It’s been an eventful day for the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday. It was announced earlier today that Kyle Dubas will not return as general manager of the Maple Leafs. In a press conference held by team president Brendan Shanahan, it was revealed that a new contract was prepared, but things changed after Dubas’s media conference on Monday. Shanahan then considered that Dubas might no longer want to continue on with the team.

A lot of questions came after Shanahan’s presser, one in which it was asked if other staff news would be announced today. The president explained how he would let the new general manager take over that department when he is named and creates the management and coaching staff he wants to work with.

However, Shanahan said nothing about retired NHLer Jason Spezza, who joined his former team as special assistant to GM Dubas back in May, 2022. But Pierre LeBrun reports that Spezza “tendered his resignation from the Leafs prior to Brendan Shanahan’s news conference today.”

This is bad news for Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment (MLSE), who would been wise to have Spezza be a part of the future. Probably out of respect and loyalty to Dubas, the retired forward resigned.

Moving from a special assistant to the GM to assistant GM could be in the cards for Spezza, however, it sounds like it won’t be in Toronto.
