Jarry out for Winter Classic, Penguins forced to dress Emergency Backup
David Ayres 2.0!? At the Winter Classic!?!?
HockeyFeed
Midway through the 2023 Winter Classic at Fenway Park in Boston and we've got an interesting situation developing.
Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry has been replaced by backup Casey DeSmith following an apparent knee injury to Jarry in the 1st frame. Jarry appeared to take a puck directly off above his knee cap above the goal pads.
Check it out:
After the 1st period the Penguins announced that Jarry will not return to action today and that DeSmith will play out the rest of the game, assuming DeSmith can stay healthy. Because we all know what happens if he can't right?
Mike Chiasson, a 36 year old goaltender instructor in the Pittsburgh area who actually grew up playing with Penguins captain Sidney Crosby in Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, is the Penguins' Emergency Backup and has been pressed into action... kinda. The former QMJHL netminder is dressed and ready for action, but he hasn't yet joined the team on the bench.
Stay tuned... we could have a potential "David Ayres" situation at the Winter Classic!
Personally, I get why these types of situations are interesting and I will forever have an affinity for Ayres and what he accomplished but... this is pretty bush league. I mean... could you imagine the MLB have an emergency pitcher of the NFL having an emergency quarterback? It would never happen. The NHL is meant to be the pinnacle of the sport and yet some Zamboni driver (no offense, Mr. Ayres) can come in off the street to bail you out? That's the literal definition of bush league, to me.
NHL goalies work their entire lives to get to the top of the sport but if two of them get injured in the same game we just trot out some guy who used to play some junior hockey a decade or longer ago? Certainly we can do better than that, right? It probably doesn't make sense for each team to dress and travel with three goaltenders so I'm not sure what the solution is, but I truly feel like the NHL needs to come up with a better solution.
