On Tuesday night, Alex Ovechkin scored his 767th NHL goal, passing Jaromir Jagr for third on the career list. Only Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe now have scored more NHL goals as the Washington Capitals’ captain needs 35 goals to pass Howe and 128 to break Gretzky’s record.
However, Ovechkin might need to reconsider another challenger as Jagr hinted at an NHL comeback to chase the Great Eight. Jagr joked that Ovechkin better keep scoring because he hasn’t yet retired in a pre-taped congratulatory video. This is what Jagr had to say to Ovechkin when congratulating him for passing him on Tuesday night:
Jagr is still playing at age 50 for Kladno, the team he owns in the Czech Republic. He has put up eight goals and 19 points in 43 games this season.
Ovechkin is under contract until age 40. At his current pace this season, he would need to average 29 goals over the next four years to pass Gretzky before his current deal expires.
In all of his career, Ovechkin has only once failed to score 29 goals or more and that was last season when he put up 24 in 45 games.
There is a feeling he will do it.
