We are still stunned that the Ottawa Senators were able to pull off the blockbuster trade that landed them defenseman Jakob Chychrun on Wednesday. The Sens pulled it off, and hit it out of the park, only parting with conditional 2023 first-round pick, a conditional 2024 second-round pick (formerly Washington’s pick) and a 2026 second-round pick in return for the star blue liner.

TSN 1200 reports how the transaction by GM Pierre Dorion is even more impressive. After speaking to Chychrun’s agent Andy Scott, there were multiple teams willing to part with the first-asked first round picks to land the defenseman.

“There were a number of balls in the air. There were multiple teams that offered 2 1st-round picks & players for Jake.”

However, Arizona was not willing to retain salary on his deal and opted for Ottawa’s offer instead.

This explains why the Senators were able to pull off the surprising trade on Wednesday.

I bet some rival clubs are wondering now why they didn’t go back with a similar deal to land the star defenseman.

Last night, in his first game with the Senators, Chychrun played for just under 20 minutes and ended the night with a +1 rating in a 5-3 win over the New York Rangers.
