The Ottawa Senators have just announced that they have acquired defenseman Jakob Chychrun from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for a conditional first-round draft pick in ’23, a conditional second-round selection in ’24 (previously acquired from the Washington Capitals) and a second-round pick in ’26.
Ottawa explains that the ’23 1st-round pick is top-5 protected. If met, the pick becomes ’24 1st-round unprotected. Additionally, should the Sens reach the Eastern conference finals, the 2nd-round pick becomes ’24 1st-round top 10-protected. If that condition is met, the pick becomes ’25 1st-round unprotected.
With just two days left prior to the trade deadline, there were still many suitors after Chychrun's services. The Senators were once reported to be out of the run, seeing the Coyotes' high asking price, but pulled off a great trade on Wednesday. The Sens did not want to have to part with prospects Ridly Grieg or goalie Mads Sogaard for Chychrun, and did not have to.
The Senators did not need for Arizona to retain money from Chychrun's salary, which was reflected in the acquisition cost. Patience paid off.
They manage to get a talented top-four blue liner to support Thomas Chabot's workload in Ottawa. Chychrun is under contract through 2024-25 with a cap hit of $4.6 million in each of the next two seasons. He has spent his entire seven-year career with the Coyotes after being drafted 16th overall by the club in 2016. He has seven goals and 28 points in 36 games this season.
And we bet he is ready for a new start in Canada.
