Jake DeBrusk signals he may be finished with Bruins
Is this the end of Jake DeBrusk in Boston?
With the offseason having officially arrived for the Boston Bruins after their second consecutive postseason defeat at the hands of the Florida Panthers, all eyes are on the moves that team management now must make over the summer. And one of the biggest storylines will be the fate of forward Jake DeBrusk.
DeBrusk rescinded a trade request and agreed to a two-year extension in 2022, and that deal happens to expire on July 1. And the two sides don't appear to be any closer to a new deal. While GM Don Sweeney has indicated that he's taken an "aggressive" approach to negotiations, DeBrusk admitted that he's a bit puzzled that things haven't culminated in ink being put to paper.
“Yeah, but I understand business is business,” DeBrusk said. “I’ve been here for a while. I’ve seen lots of deals get done with guys and things, so I kind of understand what their side is and how they usually operate. So it wasn’t necessarily like [I was] completely surprised, but I thought it’d be done.
“I thought that things would all work out earlier, I guess.”
This most recent season, DeBrusk scored 19 goals with 21 assists in 80 games played, while also contributing five goals and six assists in 13 postseason games. What exactly does the future hold for DeBrusk with the Bruins - will he run it back, or will he be playing elsewhere when teams return to the ice in the fall?
Unless something changes in a hurry, it looks as though he may have played his final game in a Bruins uniform.
