Former Rangers captain Jacob Trouba speaks out after being traded by the Rangers.
The now former captain of the New York Rangers has broken his silence after being traded on Friday during what was a rather chaotic day in the New York hockey market.
Earlier today the Rangers made it clear that veteran defenseman Jacob Trouba was done in New York, one way or another, with reports that the team was prepared to get rid of Trouba by any means necessary.
The Rangers would eventually get their way, trading Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks in a move that largely looks like a cap dump on their part.
It seemed obvious from the outside looking in that Trouba was not going to be happy about this move especially considering the fact that there are already reports that Trouba blocked at least one other attempt to trade him today.
Trouba has all but confirmed that he isn't too thrilled about the situation after speaking to the media for the first time since he was traded. Not only did Trouba indicate that he felt things could have been handled differently, but he even went so far as to suggest that he had been threatened by the team with waivers if he refused to waive his limited no trade clause.
"It was a threat," said Trouba of the possibility of being placed on waivers.
Trouba shared some thoughts on how the entire situation unfolded, none of which left the impression that he was happy about how this has all played out.
"I'll be honest, I was put in a position this summer to make a decision between my career and my family," said Trouba on Friday. "I chose my family. I would choose my family 100 times over again. I don't feel bad about that. I was happy about it. I don't like that it was made public necessarily or how everything unfolded so publicly, but I guess that's part of New York and what happens. It made it difficult to play with that hanging over everything. And today, the result is the result. I guess I'm happy with moving forward but maybe not overly thrilled with how it went down. In my opinion, things could have been handled better. I'm not blaming anybody or anything. How it happened, I felt it was kind of an unfortunate ending to a lot of good times in New York."
The deal has been struck however and there is no amount of hurt feelings that are going to undo what the Rangers have done today.
