Shane Wright scored his first NHL goal on Tuesday night, and it couldn’t come at a better time as his Seattle Kraken was facing the Montreal Canadiens. The same team that passed up on him at the NHL Draft this summer and chose Juraj Slafkovsky instead as the first overall pick.
However, his first NHL first tally came too late as TSN’s Darren Dreger now reports that it’s already over for Wright in Seattle. He is expected to report to Moncton and team Canada tomorrow.
Tuesday was also Wright’s first game back from a conditioning stint with the AHL’s Coachella Valley Firebirds, but the return to Seattle did not last long. The rookie forward had re-found his scoring touch by producing four goals in five games in the AHL, and kept the ball rolling last night.
But he will need to keep it up with Team Canada.
It was likely that Team Canada would call the Kraken to get permission to bring Wright on the roster.
The 18-year-old captained Canada to gold at the 2021 IIHF U18s, where he was second in tournament scoring with nine goals and 14 points in five games. He was named to the 2022 World Juniors team but only played in two games before it was cancelled, and did not take part in the rescheduled tournament in August where Canada won gold.
He gets a chance to go ahead in 2023. The tournament is set to run from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5. Canada kicks off its tournament on Boxing Day against Czechia.
Goodbye, Seattle. For now.
