Hockey fans in Montreal have been lucky to see legend Mike Bossy on the air of TVA Sports for the past six years as he’s given analysis during games.
However, the fanbase quickly noticed that Bossy was not around since the start of the 2021-22 season and on Tuesday, Bossy himself wrote a letter, published on the TVA Sports website, to explain why he’s been away from action.
Bossy has unfortunately been battling lung cancer.
In a poignant letter in French, he mentions how he has not said his last word and looks to strike back to win the ultimate fight against the disease.
Bossy has done extraordinary things in the NHL - we all remember how he ended up scoring 53 goals in his rookie season and taking home the Calder Trophy in the process as a 21-year-old in 1978. For nine straight seasons, Bossy would score 50 goals or more. Unfortunately, due to injury, Bossy only played 10 years in the NHL but in 752 career games, he found the back of the net 573 times. That’s a goals per game pace of .76. For comparison, Wayne Gretzky finished his career with a .60 pace.
We send our thoughts and prayers to Bossy and know he has a lot in store to fight this cancer and win the fight!
