Islanders confirm two massive injuries on Saturday.

Terrible news from the Islanders regarding forward Mathew Barzal and defenseman Adam Pelech.

A nightmare scenario for the New York Islanders.

On Saturday, Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello officially confirmed that his team would be without two of their top players for quite some time with both star forward Mat Barzal and defenseman Adam Pelech out long term due to injuries.

Both men are expected to miss the next four to six weeks as a result of their injuries, with Lamoriello informing reporters on Saturday that Barzal is headed to long term injured reserve while Pelech will be placed on injured reserve. Lamoriello also confirmed that the injuries are upper body injuries in both cases.

It was announced earlier this week that Barzal was headed back to New York to be evaluated by medical professionals and unfortunately the outcome appears to have been pretty unfortunate. It remains unclear when exactly he suffered the injury, but some have speculated that it may have occurred on this hit during a game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

In a pair of corresponding moves, the Islanders have recalled defensemen Grant Hutton and Samuel Bolduc from the Bridgeport Islanders.

The Islanders will also be without the services of defenseman Mike Reilly and defenseman Alexander Romanov, both also sidelined due to upper body injuries, although in the case of Reilly and Romanov things are expected to be much more short term. Both men are being listed as day to day by the Islanders, which means they will likely be back in the lineup in relatively short order.

This is obviously a devastating injury update for an Islanders team that was already struggling to start the season with a record of 4-5-2.
