Interview leads to injury during Stadium Series game.
An unfortunate situation unfolded during an interview at the Stadium Series game in Ohio today.
Oh boy I hope ESPN's Marty Smith is going to be ok after this one.
On Saturday the National Hockey League held its latest Stadium Series game in Columbus, Ohio when the Columbus Blue Jackets welcomed the Detroit Red Wings for an outdoor game in front of nearly 90,000 passionate hockey fans. It would be during a break in that game that Smith would find himself in some trouble after a light hearted interview ended in a bit of a headache for Smith.
Smith was interviewing members of the Ohio State football team, a team that normally plays at Ohio Stadium where today's outdoor game was held, and it would be at the conclusion of his interview with the football team that things would turn bad for Smith. After wrapping up his questions, Smith asked the players if they could lift him over the crowd and back behind them to where he had emerged from, which they were very happy to do with the much smaller man. Smith went up and over pretty quickly and it looked like the boys were having an easy time moving him along, that was until Smith went crashing down to the ground.
Smith could be heard uttering the rather adorable curse of "sugar pie" as he hit the ground with an audible thud, hopefully a sign that he wasn't too seriously injured by the fall. Unfortunately Smith appeared to be tilted in a manner that suggested he may have fell head first which could have made the fall much worse.
Here's a look at how it happened on the broadcast:
Here is a closer look at Smith being lifted over the players before eventually falling:
