Rumours have recently linked the Carolina Hurricanes to huge trade baits like Chicago Blackhawks’ Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews and San Jose Sharks’ Timo Meier, and on Wednesday, general manager Don Waddell basically confirmed his team was planning something big.
Waddell willingly admitted to the potential plan to make a splash on the trade market, stating to The Athletic Hockey Podcast that their "1st round pick is up for play this year.”
In the summer, the Canes brought Max Pacioretty on board for added fire power, however, the veteran forward is now out for the season after suffering yet another Achilles tear. But his injury actually opens up some different opportunities for Carolina to consider from a salary cap perspective with the Pacioretty’s $7MM AAV now on long term injured reserve.
Waddell also pointed that he’s gotten to know Sharks GM Mike Grier better, though he has reportedly held talks with the New Jersey Devils about Meier. The Devils would want to have a contact extension in play to pull the trigger on a trade. The Hurricanes also have had talks with San Jose in the last few days, and they are reportedly willing to make this move without an extension.
Ahead of Wednesday night’s action, Carolina sits first overall in the Metropolitan division and just second behind the Boston Bruins, who stand seven points above the Canes.
It feels like it’s a matter of when and not if the Hurricanes get going on the trade market.
