The Edmonton Oilers have placed veteran forward Sam Gagner on waivers.

Check it out:

The 34 year old has five goals and 10 points in just 27 games with the Oilers this season after re-joining the team for a third stint. If he clears waivers it's expected that he'll be assigned to the Oilers' AHL affiliate Bakersfield Condors.

What's most interesting about this move though is that it could point to a larger move being made by Oilers GM Ken Holland in the coming days. The Oilers did NOT have to send a player down and, near as I can tell, they aren't expecting anyone to come off the injured reserve. All of this is to say that there could be a move coming from Oilers management between now and Friday's deadline. Stay tuned.

Meanwhile, today was a particularly busy day on the NHL's waiver wire around the league.

Gagner joins four other players on waivers today, with a strong Western Conference contigent.

Additionally, two players who were on waivers yesterday have been claimed by new clubs.

Something tells me we could see a whole lot more moving and shaking on the waiver wire over the next 48 hours. Again, stay tuned.
