Hold up in monster Noah Hanifin trade revealed!

This is how the Vegas Golden Knights made it work. On Wednesday, it was announced that Vegas had acquired defenseman Noah Hanifin from the Calgary Flames.

It's taken some time to announce the full details of the transaction, but here are some that we know. It was mentioned earlier on in the works of the transaction that a third team was in the mix for Vegas to acquire Hanifin at 75% retained ($1.2375M cap hit). 

As Sportsnet insider for the Flames Eric Francis explains, "the hold up on the Noah Hanifin deal revolves around the involvement of a third party offering up salary retention, which has become the norm in deals these days."

Also, TSN's Darren Dreger reported that Golden Knights young defenseman Daniil Miromanov was goint to Calgary in the transaction. Elliotte Friedman also reported that a first-round pick is also included. 

There's also speculation the Golden Knights will sign Hanifin to a contract extension.

When it comes to that third team, which remains unknown at this time, talks have surfaced that it could be a club currently working on a separate trade to make room, and as Dan Kingerski comments : "it's taking longer than expected."

As of late on Wednesday evening, the full return is not yet known.

In Miromanov, the Flames are getting a 26-year-old Russian blue liner, who went undrafted, but has worked his way through the ECHL, KHL and AHL. The right-handed defenseman, who stands at 6-foot-4 and 207 pounds, had an impressive 11 goals and 40 points in 53 games two years ago. He has 29 games of NHL experience and will be a restricted free agent this summer, but reportedly interested in a contract in Calgary. 

Hanifin was considered the most coveted blue liner on the market in the lead-up to Friday’s NHL trade deadline. He spent the past six seasons with the Flames, posting a total of 42 goals, 149 assists and a plus-46 rating. He is quite the acquisitions for a busy Vegas crew that has also acquired forward Anthony Mantha of the Washington Capitals on Tuesday, and are reportedly in the mix to land Pittsburgh Penguins star winger Jake Guentzel.

Vegas now looks to have one of the NHL’s deepest defense corps as Hanifin joins Alex Pietrangelo and Shea Theodore on a deep blue line. Both aforementioned players were part of Vegas’ Stanley Cup-winning roster last spring.

The Golden Knights visit the Flames in Calgary next Thursday when we should, let’s hope, know the full details on this major Hanifin trade.
