The American Hockey League's Hershey Bears have made an annual tradition of the Teddy Bear Toss but unfortunately for both the team and for the young children who benefit from this wonderful event, they have been forced to cancel the event for 2 consecutive years as a result of the pandemic caused by the spread of Covid.
On Saturday night however the Hershey Bears, and their amazing fans, finally were able to bring the tradition back and boy oh boy did they ever bring it back in a major way. I suspect that the Hershey Bears and their loyal fan base may have been looking to break the world record, a record that they themselves set in 2019 when a staggering 45,650 plush toys were collected during a single game, and if I am being honest it looks like they may have pulled it off. We won't know the official number for a little while considering just how many stuffed animals there will be to count as a result of this event, but whatever the number ends up being it will be incredible.
The scene in Hershey, Pennsylvania was nothing short of insane on Saturday night when fans showered the ice with thousands upon thousands of bears, something that the broadcast crew appropriately described as "sweet cuddly mayhem." Here's a look at the initial outpouring of stuffed animals following the first goal scored by the Hershey Bears in tonight's game:
It's hard to give an accurate description of just how crowded the ice became given that there were staff members assigned with the collection of the bears almost as soon as they came out, but as you can see there were literal mounds of stuffed animals all over the ice tonight.
The players also seemed to have a great time with the event, repeatedly launching themselves onto the giant piles of teddy bears all over the ice.
Here's another one:
According to the Hershey Bears the tossing of the stuffed animals lasted several long minutes, and at the end of the day that means a lot of children are going to end up with a big smile on their face thanks to this wonderful event.
