When you cover any topic at length you run into a lot of interesting things along the way that you would have otherwise never expected to see, and sometimes those things cause your jaw to hit the floor. That was exactly the case for me when I stumbled upon this collection of what the artist has described as "Heritage" designs for all 32 teams in the National Hockey League.
I stumbled upon the designs on Imgur of all places and they were made by Boyan Demchuk who describes himself as a "Toronto Based Journalist, Designer and Video Editor." There has been a ton of work and a ton of care put into this series of designs, and you can see how he describes the process in the Instagram post he made below:
Now let's get to the part that you've all been waiting for, the designs themselves. They are nothing short of breathtaking and quite frankly I don't think words will do them any justice, so with that in mind I will let the designs themselves do the talking.
First up we have the design for the Anaheim Ducks, and of course it was inspired by The Mighty Ducks:
The design for the Arizona Coyotes draws upon the heritage of the Phoenix Roadrunners:
The Buffalo Sabres design pays homage to the Buffalo Bisons of the past:
The Boston Bruins design draws upon the original design from nearly a century ago:
The design for the Carolina Hurricanes draws upon the heritage of the Raleigh Icecaps and the Hartford Whalers:
The Columbus Blue Jackets design pays tribute to the Cleveland Barons, and the Cleveland Crusaders:
One of my favorites in this collection, the Calgary Flames design draws inspiration from the Calgary Stampeders:
The Chicago Blackhawks design pays tribute to the name's military origin:
The Colorado Avalanche design is of course a tribute to the Colorado Rockies:
The Dallas Stars design draws upon the original design for the Houston Aeros:
Perhaps the best of the bunch, the Detroit Red Wings design pays tribute to the octopus that has become synonymous with the franchise:
The Edmonton Oilers design draws inspiration from the Edmonton Flyers:
The design for the Florida Panthers is one of the more unique ones, drawing inspiration from the Tropical Hockey League:
The Los Angeles Kings design has a very classic feel to it:
The Minnesota Wild draw on the Minneapolis Millers in a big way, while also featuring the colors of the St. Paul Saints:
The Montreal Canadiens design doesn't stray too far from their classic tradition:
The New Jersey Devils get a fresh new look with a tribute to The Jersey Devils and the Kansas City Scouts:
The Nashville Predators design draws inspiration from the Nashville Knights:
The New York Islanders design combines many looks from the past, including that of the New York Raiders:
The New York Rangers also don't stray too far while drawing inspiration from the New York Americans:
The design for the Ottawa Senators pays homage to Senators designs from the past:
The Philadelphia Flyers look sharp with a design inspired by the Philadelphia Quakers:
The Pittsburgh Penguins keep a classic look while paying tribute to the Pittsburgh Bankers on their sleeves:
The Seattle Kraken salute the Seattle Metropolitans in their heritage design:
The San Jose Sharks look more like the prey this time around in a tribute to the Golden Seals:
The St. Louis Blues rock an awesome hybrid of their logo mixed with the logo of the St. Louis Eagles:
The Tampa Bay Lightning draw inspiration from the Jacksonville Rockets' design:
The Toronto Maple Leafs go way back for a design inspired by the St. Pats:
The Vancouver Canucks bring back the Flying V, although the color scheme in this one fits the design much better:
The Las Vegas Golden Knights pay homage to the Las Vegas Gamblers with this design:
The Winnipeg Jets draw upon both their current design and that of the Winnipeg Falcons:
The Washington Capitals get a sleek looking jersey in a tribute to the Washington Lions:
I can't express enough how stunned I was by all these incredible designs and I genuinely hope that someone at the National Hockey League will spot these and will consider reaching out to Mr. Demchuk to pick his brain for ideas on potential designs in the future. If you're also a fan of these you can check out all of these designs and more of his artwork on the Instagram page where he publishes all of them, here.
