The saying of needing to give in order to get held true once again for the Detroit Red Wings this offseason, as they parted with an asset already on the team in order to acquire a homegrown talent. Last month, it was sending forward Dominik Kubalik to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for the Farmington-born Alex DeBrincat.
Earlier this week, Detroit brought home another Michigan native in veteran defenseman Jeff Petry from the Montreal Canadiens, the son of former Detroit Tigers World Series champion pitcher Dan Petry. In order to facilitate the deal, Detroit sent defenseman Gustav Lindstrom along with a conditional draft choice back to the Canadiens.
And not long after the trade was completed, Lindstrom sent a farewell message to the organization as well as the fan base via his Instagram account.
"Thank you to the organization of @detroitredwings, teammates and fans for my four years in Detroit. It’s been incredible.
I’m really excited about the new opportunity in @canadiensmtl
Can’t wait for October."
Lindstrom was drafted 38th overall by the Red Wings in the 2017 NHL Draft; the pick was made by now-former Red Wings general manger Ken Holland. He would go on to appear in 128 career NHL games with the Red Wings, scoring twice while adding 23 assists.
