Goaltending controversy in Toronto after just 13 games.
Former NHL player Nick Kypreos made some strongly worded comments after the Maple Leafs' loss on Sunday.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have something of a goaltending controversy on their hands, at least that is what one former National Hockey League player appears to believe.
On Sunday night, following a Maple Leafs loss at the hands of the Minnesota Wild, former NHLer Nick Kypreos made it clear that he feels Stolarz has earned the right to be the Leafs' number one goaltender moving forward. Kypreos made it seem like he feels Stolarz has been the most important facet of this team through the first 13 games of the 2024-25 regular season.
"Stolarz continues to be the major, major story," said Kypreos on Sunday night. "From the beginning of training camp right up until this point."
Kypreos believes there is no doubt about the fact that the Maple Leafs net should now belong to Stolarz moving forward.
"There's no question who the number one goaltender is," said Kypreos of Stolarz.
Goaltender Joseph Woll was supposed to be the Leafs number one goalie this season but questions surrounding his health put that into doubt early in training camp. While Woll has been unable to remain healthy, appearing in only 3 games for the Leafs thus far this season, Stolarz has shined between the pipes.
"I appreciate Woll coming in and trying his best but he doesn't give them the big save," said Kypreos. "He didn't last night, Stolarz continues to do that and gives his team a chance to win."
Kypreos doubled down on his comments regarding Stolarz being the team's top goaltending option, and went a step further suggesting that the Leafs should continue to lean on Stolarz if they hope to work their way back into contention.
"He's the number one goalie now, you're a mid team, you wanna pull yourself back up in the Atlantic play Stolarz the next two games," added Kypreos.
When Kypreos' fellow panelists suggested that the two goalies split the starts this week, with Stolarz playing on Tuesday against the Boston Bruins and Woll playing Friday's game against the Detroit Red Wings, Kypreos fired back suggesting Woll should sit on the sidelines until next weekend.
"You can wait for Woll Saturday, that's your number one goalie," said Kypreos of Stolarz.
