Future of Jonatan Berggren decided?

While fans of the Detroit Red Wings continue to debate the merits of general manager Steve Yzerman's decision to only part was with forward Klim Kostin at last week's NHL Trade Deadline and not to make any meaningful additions, it sounds as though they're viewing one valuable asset from the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins as their main Deadline acquisition. 

Forward Jonatan Berggren, who was recalled from the Griffins following the injury to captain Dylan Larkin, has already appeared in nine games for Detroit earlier this season, scoring two goals and adding three assists. His first game back with the Red Wings wasn't as ideal, as he committed an unforced turnover that allowed the Vegas Golden Knights to score during the 1st period.

However, according to Lalonde, Berggren could even be considered Detroit's Trade Deadline acquisition. 

"We are hoping he is going to help us down the stretch here," said Lalonde. "If he will, maybe he’s our deadline addition."

Naturally, Berggren is going to be held accountable by the coaching staff. 

"Like anyone else, we want to hold him accountable. It’s something we address when we have video with the team and individual one-on-ones. Because we have a lot of guys that want to make plays, sometimes at the risk of the team game. We still want him to make plays, like all of our skilled (players), but do it in the correct way."

Last year, Berggren appeared in a total of 67 games and showcased his abilities at the NHL level, scoring 15 goals with 13 assists. Following tonight's game in Buffalo, he will have played in a total of 78 NHL games, meaning he'll only need two more in order to become waiver exempt.
