Martin Necas is getting moved by the Carolina Hurricanes.
These bombshells were thrown in the NHL universe on Friday and now, insiders are all making sense of it.
Earlier on Friday night, Hall was pulled from the Blackhawks’ lineup ahead of their game against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Pierre LeBrun was first to then confirmed that the Hurricanes were involved, along with a third team, in a trade for Hall.
Then, Frank Seravalli revealed that the Avalanche was sending Rantanen out to Carolina as well. More reports hinted at Necas being involved in the deal as well, and now all the details are out in this complex three-team trade that stunned everyone on Friday night.
Here are the details being presented in the trade call:
Carolina: Mikko Rantanen, Taylor Hall
Colorado: Martin Necas, Jack Drury, along with two draft picks, 2nd rounder in the 2025 Draft and 4th rounder in the 2026 Draft (all from Carolina).
Chicago: third-round pick (their own returned from Carolina), 50 per cent of Rantanen salary. That is $4.6M on retention in Chicago.
AND THE TRADE IS OFFICIAL:
Colorado trades Mikko Rantanen to Chicago in return for UDC Nils Juntorp
Chicago trades Mikko Rantanen (50% retained) and Taylor Hall to Carolina in return for Chicago’s own 2025 3rd round draft pick
Carolina trades Martin Necas, Jack Drury, Carolina’s own 2025 2nd round draft pick, and Carolina’s own 2026 4th round draft pick for UDC Nils Juntorp
The Hurricanes were the first ones to announce it on social media once the trade call was finalized:
Rantanen is eligible for UFA status on July 1. He's in the final season of a six-year contract with an average annual value of $9.5 million. For now, there is no extension for Rantanen as part of the deal.
It had been believed the Rantanen camp was seeking something comparable to the $14 million average annual value that the Edmonton Oilers will pay Leon Draisaitl starting on July 1. The Avalanche wanted him to accept something closer to teammate Nathan MacKinnon's $12.6 million. There were recent rumours that Colorado was having a hard time in contract negotiations, which obviously led to the Avalanche moving the pending free agent.
It was believed that the Avalanche weren’t shopping Rantanen as the two sides intended to revisit contract talks following next month’s 4 Nations Face-Off, but the move is taking EVERYONE by surprise.
