A former Ottawa Senators draft selection who played in the minors that also included a stop with the Toronto Marlies has been sentenced to six months in prison after multiple allegations of sexual assault along with harassment and threatening his former girlfriend.
Gabriel Gagné, who was drafted by the Senators with the 36th overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, will be spending the next half year behind bars after being convicted on charges of harassment and death threats; his sexual assault charges were acquitted.
The French-to-English translation from TVA Sports reads:
"The hockey player, who had a significant problem with alcohol consumption, called his ex-girlfriend incessantly in the summer of 2017, regardless of the time of day. By text messages, he told her “sometimes that he has always loved her, sometimes that he hates her. It is insulting and sometimes denigrating”, can we read in the joint summary of the facts. The 26-year-old man pleaded guilty last May to charges of harassment and death threats at the Saint-Jérôme courthouse.
Judge Nancy McKenna then sentenced him to six months in prison. In this case, he was acquitted of sexual assault and obtained a conditional stay of proceedings on one count of assault.
To circumvent the fact that she had blocked her social networks and her telephone number, Gabriel Gagné had even gone so far as to create multiple fake accounts to continue to communicate repeatedly with his victim, whose identity is protected by the court."
What a shame that this young man threw away what could have been a promising future in the NHL by his terrible life choices.
