Former NHL goaltender Greg Millen has passed away.
The NHL Alumni Association has sadly announced the passing for former NHL goaltender Greg Millen.
The hockey community lost one of it's own today with a very sad announcement on Monday from the National Hockey League Alumni Association.
Former NHL goaltender and NHL analyst Greg Millen has sadly passed away at the age of just 67 years of age.
Millen began his NHL career after he was drafted in the 6th round (102nd overall) of the 1977 NHL Amateur Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins, embarking on his NHL career the following year with that very same team. Over his career Millen would appear in a total of 604 NHL games for a number of teams around the league including the aforementioned Penguins, the Hartford Whalers, St. Louis Blues, Quebec Nordiques, Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings.
While Millen's final season in the NHL came during the 1991-92 season as a member of the Detroit Red Wings, he would continue to be a household name for hockey fans, especially those in Canada, after stepping into the broadcast boost following his on-ice career. Millen was the voice of the Ottawa Senators as a color commentator for their first 11 years in the NHL, joining the expansion franchise in 1992-93 as they made their debut in the league.
Millen would also earn himself a role on Hockey Night in Canada, eventually working alongside the likes of the legendary Bob Cole .
In 2005 Millen would join the Maple Leafs broadcast as color commentator and covered that team from the broadcast booth for several years before shifting to coverage of the Calgary Flames for Hockey Night in Canada in 2014.
Millen's broadcast career was so extensive in fact that you could argue it outshined his career on the ice. As a broadcaster Millen covered an unbelievable twelve All-Star games, two World Cups of Hockey, 3 Olympic Games and 12 Stanley Cup Finals.
Millen was also a family man and sadly he leaves behind his wife and four children. My deepest condolences go out to the Millen family during this difficult time.
