Fans outraged after another brutal call from NHL officials.
NHL officials make a mind-boggling call on Sunday leaving fans outraged as a result.
I've got to be honest, I have no clue what the National Hockey League considers goaltender interference anymore. There seems to be just as much inconsistency when it comes to the application of the goaltender interference rule as there is when it comes to fines and suspension from the NHL's Department of Player Safety.
Hockey fans, especially those located in the city of Winnipeg, were left stunned on Sunday when a seemingly obvious coach's challenge from Winnipeg Jets head coach Scott Arniel would fail despite what appeared to be clear evidence of goaltender interference.
The issue would arise during the first period of Sunday's game between the aforementioned Jets and Tampa Bay Lightning when Lightning forward Conor Geekie crashed the crease in an attempt to score. The puck was loose in the crease and Geekie was trying to bat at it, but after missing the puck initially he appeared to clearly shove Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck deep into his own net by using his stick to push on Hellebuyck's right pad.
You can see a replay of the incident in question just below:
As you would expect in a situation such as this, the play was quickly challenged by Jets head coach Scott Arniel, but the Jets would not get the result they had expected. After reviewing the play, the on-ice officials would come back and state that they had seen no goaltender interference on the play, ruling it a good goal.
Arniel expressed his disbelief at the call on the ice and did so again following the conclusion of the game when asked about the challenge.
"We were," said Arniel when asked if he was surprised at the NHL's decision.
Although Arniel stopped short of calling out the NHL and its officials, he made it clear that he felt his team had made the right decision in issuing the challenge and would do so again if they found themselves in a similar scenario.
"We'd call that all day, we would challenge that every time," added the Jets head coach.
I don't know what the NHL saw on the play that made them rule in the manner that they did, and judging by the reaction from fans it sounds like no one else does either.
