Fans furious over offside challenge at the All-Star Game.
Only in the NHL.
The National Hockey League appears determined to make this All-Star weekend as big of a faceplant as humanly possible.
On Saturday afternoon, after a horrible All-Star skills competition on Friday, the NHL held the All-Star Game between the Central and Pacific divisions and it wasn't long before the boo birds once again came out to let the league know they weren't too happy.
In the first period of what is supposed to be a fun affair for the fans, head coach Peter DeBoer of the Dallas Stars decided it would be a great idea to issue a coach's challenge for an offside after a goal. The goal, which was scored by Vancouver Canucks star forward Elias Pettersson and former Canucks teammate Bo Horvat now of the New York Islanders, was in fact offside but I think that mattered very little to those in attendance who were there for a show.
Here are a few examples of the reaction to the challenge:
The fans showered DeBoer with boos both during the initial announcement of the challenge as well as during the announcement of the decision by the league. In fact you can hardly blame DeBoer alone for this fiasco, given that the league reviewed the goal and decided to call it back instead of letting play continue in what is at the end of the day a glorified exhibition game.
DeBoer however does not agree, and he would go on to explain a few reasons for why he felt it was a good idea to challenge the goal.
"There's a lot of cash on the line here tonight, this is all business," said DeBoer. "It's competitive, these guys are competitive and they want to win. Connor Hellebuyck told me he's done three of these and he hasn't won a game yet so we're trying to get him a win."
Even the officials on the ice didn't seem too thrilled by the challenge though, so I doubt that this explanation is going to win many of those who were irritated by the challenge over to DeBoer's side.
