Fans expose rumoured rift between Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews after Tuesday’s overtime win
Is this for real or are some fans blowing up the Team Canada - Team USA rivalry? Full story below:
Both Toronto Maple Leafs star forwards Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews have admitted to feeling fatigued following an emotional experience at the 4 Nations Face-Off.
However, it did not prevent Marner from scoring the overtime winner on Tuesday night against the Boston Bruins. After the game-winning goal, Marner celebrated, but ended up accidentally leaving one of his teammates hanging in the process. It was Matthews.
Fans picked that up quickly on social media, thanks to various videos out there, and started wondering if there was some rift between the two teammates following the 4 Nations Face-Off and Canada’s overtime victory thanks to a goal set up by none other than Marner.
In the footage below, you can how how Marner blew right past Matthews, skating towards his goaltender, Anthony Stolarz, instead, inadvertently leaving his captain high and dry when he went for the high five.
You know it does not take much in Toronto to get fans in a panic and this scene, along with recent reports that the Maple Leafs could let Marner walk and hit fre agency this summer got the fanbase wondering is there is some animosity following the international tournament between the two star players.
For the sake of the Maple Leafs in the months ahead, let’s hope not since they will need the teammates to work in unison for a deep playoff run.
