Evander Kane's time in Edmonton coming to an end.
Evander Kane may have put himself in a position that will force the Oilers to make a trade.
Evander Kane may have put his current team in a position that will force them to make a difficult decision over the course of the next few days.
On Saturday night, National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that the Oilers may now be looking to move on from Kane in an effort to clear up additional cap space they can use prior to the NHL's trade deadline on March 7th.
"Last night Evander Kane no trade protection evaporated," revealed Friedman on HNIC. "He no longer has a full no trade clause, he has a partial one."
It sounds like the Oilers were hoping for a scenario where Kane would be out until the start of the Stanley Cup playoffs, allowing them to utilize additional cap space with Kane on long term injured reserve during the regular season, but Kane has made it clear as of late that he wants to get back on the ice and play as soon as possible. It would seem that, given Kane's desires, the Oilers are now exploring their options.
"The Oilers are trying to see if there's a market for Kane," admitted Friedman. "If they do decide to go in that direction they could open up more cap rooms for themselves."
Kane is currently in the third year of a four year deal, one that carries an average annual value and cap hit of $5.125 million per season. It is unclear what kind of player the Oilers would be targeting if they did manage to get out from under Kane's contract, nor has there been any indication on whether or not there are any teams willing to take on Kane's contract given both his current injury situation as well the checkered past that has damaged his reputation at the NHL level.
