Emotional tribute to Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau on Saturday night.
Emotional tribute to Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau from the Flyers and Blue Jackets on Saturday night.
It was a big night for both the Philadelphia Flyers and Columbus Blue Jackets organizations on Saturday night as the two teams faced off with the passing of National Hockey League star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew Gaudreau still front and center on the minds of many players and fans alike.
Johnny of course played for the Columbus Blue Jackets and the city of Philadelphia means so much to the Gaudreau family including Johnny himself who was a Flyers fan growing up. That being said, with these two teams going head to head on Saturday night it came as no surprise to see the two brothers being honored before the game.
Before the puck even dropped Flyers players were seen wearing the colors of Gloucester Catholic as they arrived for the game, a touching tribute to the two young men who were taken from the hockey community, the world, and of course the Gaudreau family far too soon.
In a very classy gesture the Flyers and Blue Jackets would welcome the Gaudreau family out onto the ice prior to the start of the game for the ceremonial puck drop in what was an emotional and quite frankly heartbreaking moment. Johnny's young children were on hand as was his widow Meredith, the boys' parents, sister Katie, and more as they all walked out to the ice for the ceremonial puck drop.
It was great to see Johnny's long time friend and former teammate Sean Monahan there for the ceremonial puck drop as well, which was a nice bit of good fortune with Monahan now playing for the Blue Jackets after signing with them in the summer in the hopes of reuniting with his good buddy on the ice.
You can see the pre game tribute in the short clip below.
