Brutal and heartbreaking…

Team Canada suffered a heartbreaking loss in the quarterfinal with the Czech Republic at the 2024 World Juniors hockey championship Tuesday thanks to a dramatic decider in the final seconds of regulation. After erasing an early 2-0 deficit and overtime looming, the defending champions were ousted of the tournament when Jakub Stancl scored his second goal of the game with 11.7 seconds left in regulation and Czechia moved on to the tournament’s semifinals on Thursday. Canada, which had played in four straight finals, suffered its first-ever loss to the Czechs in the medal round.
“Horrible way to end things,” Owen Beck said after the heartbreaking defeat.
What was almost heartbreaking after the game was the footage that emerges from the team’s dressing room.
Just hours after the game, TSN shared footage of Team Canada’s dressing room, which had been quickly emptied and left like almost nothing had ever taken place within its walls… As TSN puts it in the publication, it feels quite eerie.
It makes sense, of course, the boys aren’t going to stick around, especially when there are no more games for them to play… but I have to admit, as a Canadian hockey fan, this was tough to watch. Almost like it was all a bad dream… It does not seem real.
This is the first time Czechia has beaten Canada in the medal round at the World Juniors.
It was the end of Canada’s pursuit of a third consecutive gold medal at the tournament… and the end of their own dressing room and the players being together in the same uniform.
Earlier on Tuesday, Finland beat Slovakia 4-3 in overtime in the first quarterfinal to advance to the semifinals. Team USA routed Latvia 7-2 that same day to advance to Thursday’s semifinals, while Sweden survived a scare to make it as well to the semifinals with a 3-2 win over underdog Switzerland.
The tournament keeps going… without Canada.
