There's a certain hockey player for the Toronto Maple Leafs who is a reasonably good goal scorer, to put it lightly. You may have heard of him, his name is Auston Matthews. He hails from the hockey hotbed (okay, sarcasm) of the Arizona deserts, and got his love of the game churning thanks to growing up as a fan of the hapless pet project of the NHL in the Coyotes.

In all seriousness, Matthews is absolutely tearing it up right now. He's posted back to back hat tricks in each of Toronto's first two games, both of them wins over the Montreal Canadiens and Minnesota Wild at home at Scotiabank Arena.

And he's caught the attention of another very well known figure in hockey circles, the man known affectionately as "Grapes" - former Hockey Night in Canada host and NHL coach Don Cherry.

In his most recent podcast, Cherry stated that there's no reason to believe that Matthews can't start the season with a hat trick of hat tricks.

"Does Matthews go 3 or 3 on hat-tricks tonight? I wouldn't bet against it," he said.

The Leafs next hit the ice tonight against the Chicago Blackhawks, who feature young phenom forward Connor Bedard; like Matthews, Bedard was selected 1st overall by an Original 6 squad, and there's been plenty of hype surrounding the start of his young career.
