Discouraging update released on Alex Lyon

Detroit Red Wings goaltender Alex Lyon played in a new career-high 44 games this past season, his first with the Red Wings after being lured from the Florida Panthers with a free-agent contract. He was also an unsung hero at many points during the season, stepping in for the injured Ville Husso. 

Following the conclusion of the 2023-24 campaign, Lyon elected to represent the United States on the international stage at the ongoing World Championship in Czechia. However, an injury has forced his return to North America.

After stopping the 14 shots that he saw against Team Germany, Lyon was forced from the game in the 2nd period after reportedly being accidentally stepped on by an on-ice official. And it was Red Wings draft pick Trey Augustine who came into the game in relief of Lyon after the latter's departure. 

Augustine would stop 11 of the 12 shots that he faced, helping Team USA to victory over Germany. 

Just like his teammate Ville Husso, Lyon is entering the final year of his current contract with the Red Wings, and the pair are likely to be in competition with one another for the starting role for 2024-25.
