Brandon Sutter is expected to join the Edmonton Oilers on a professional tryout offer for 2023-24, according to the team’s color commentator Bob Stauffer.
The interesting thing that comes from the offer is not only that Sutter is the son of former Calgary Flames’ head coach Darryl, but that he last played in the NHL with Vancouver during the 2020-21 season. Before he was diagnosed with long-COVID that has kept him out of the game since May 2021, he had put up nine goals and 12 points.
At the end of the 2022-23 campaign, Sutter had explained how he was finally starting to feel better and making progress.
“It’s been a long road for sure, got to learn more about my immune system than I ever thought I would, but I’m starting to see some light in the tunnel for sure and just becoming a good dad again and starting to come around for sure.”
Sutter is known for shutting down opponents and being a reliable two-way forward ever since he was selected 11th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2007.
After playing for the Canes and then the Pittsburgh Penguins, he ended up with the Canucks where he signed a one-year deal to play with the Canucks in 2021-22. He however never suited up due to the effects of long-COVID, and will now get a chance with the Oilers on a PTO.
He has recorded 289 career points in 770 games over 13 NHL seasons. An NHL comeback would be so impressive for Sutter.
