Dallas Stars being investigated for CBA violation.
The Dallas Stars are in trouble with the NHL thanks to Stars head coach Peter DeBoer.
The Dallas Stars may have gotten themselves in some trouble and it sounds like head coach Peter DeBoer is to blame in this scenario.
The National Hockey League was on a mandatory break over the holiday season, one the players have negotiated as part of the collective bargaining agreement, but it would appear as though head coach Peter DeBoer ignored that particular rule in the CBA and now the team may have to pay for it. DeBoer admitted to reporters this week that the team had held an optional skate on the day following Christmas, the 26th of December, and confirmed that again on Saturday along with some additional information.
DeBoer admitted to reporters today that he believes the league is currently looking into the matter, which likely means that there will be some consequences for the Stars sooner rather than later.
"I'm assuming if the League's looking into it, I made a mistake somewhere there," admitted DeBoer. "We'll see what that investigation comes up with."
This is not the first time that an NHL team has made this kind of mistake and it has proven to be costly for those teams in the past, which is very likely to be the case here for the Stars. Making matters worse in this case is that DeBoer admitted that younger players often feel an obligation that they need to show up for optional practices, adding that he feels they should feel that way. That certainly makes the optional skate sound a whole lot less optional, something the National Hockey League Players Association won't be happy about considering they negotiated that mandatory holiday break for their players.
The Philadelphia Flyers received an undisclosed fine for violating this same rule in 2015 and the Toronto Maple Leafs received a hefty $100,000 fine for violating the rule in 2022, which likely indicates that the Stars are headed for a hefty fine as well.
It remains to be seen if DeBoer's comments on the matter will make this situation worse than those we have seen in the past
