If or when?

Claude Giroux had the time of his life during the All-Star Game as he was named MVP and received a new Honda Passport for scoring three goals in the tournament, including two goals in the championship final against the Central Division. He spent the weekend playing with the best players in the league and is now back in Philadelphia to deal with the struggling Flyers. There is a sense that he got a taste of success and will be hoping to go after it.
There has been trade chatter in the past weeks as fans and pundits are wondering if Giroux will leave the only team he’s ever played for… Giroux has been a lifelong member of the Flyers since being drafted in the 1st round (22nd overall) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, having played all 985 of the NHL games in his career with that franchise, but for perhaps the first time in his tenure with the Flyers there is serious chatter around whether or not he will even finish the season in Philadelphia.
While last month it was reported that both Giroux and the Flyers were waiting to get closer to the trade deadline to make a decision, chatter has grown and now Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman went on NHL Network to declare that he considers the Colorado Avalanche to be the perfect trade destination for Giroux. However, given Given Giroux’s $8.25 million cap hit, Friedman suggested a possible three-way trade involving a club that has the space for it and is willing to absorb part of the Flyers forward’s cap hit. He listed the Ottawa Senators, Detroit Red Wings, Buffalo Sabres and New Jersey Devils as options. While many thought the Arizona Coyotes could come into the mix to help out with the numbers, they have two retained salaries but can only have three. It would all depend on what they get as a sweetener to make the deal happen.
Giroux has failed to capture a Stanley Cup during his NHL career and could potentially be open to the idea of moving to a contending team at the deadline for a chance at the Cup at this stage of his career. He’s been linked to the Avalanche quite a bit lately.
Whether or not that matters more to him than spending his entire career as a member of the Flyers remains to be seen. He is likely to have met with his agent Pat Brisson during the All-Star Game weekend.
