Earlier today, Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin announced the death of his father on Instagram.
“Today my father passed away,” Ovechkin posted on his Instagram page, as translated by Google. “I thank everyone for their support, but I ask you to be understanding and not disturb my family at such a difficult time for us! Thank you.”
Hours later, the Capitals posted a statement on their social media sending their condolences to Ovechkin and his family.
In a moving post, the Caps wrote:
The Washington Capitals organization is saddened to hear of the passing of our captain Alex Ovechkin’s father, Mr. Mikhail Ovechkin. Mr. Ovechkin was a true gentleman and was such a significant and consistent presence at Capitals games and practices. With a constant smile on his face, he loved interacting with our fans expressing his gratitude for their support of his son, of whom he was incredibly proud. Our organization’s thoughts are with the Ovechkin at this difficult time.
The Capitals changed their noon practice to an optional skate after hearing of the news.
We are all thinking of Ovechkin and his family during this difficult time.
