Cap issues could allow Maple Leafs to land top player!

And at a low cost. Bargain in Toronto, wouldn’t you say?

The Maple Leafs are not usually the lucky ones when it comes to cap constraints, however, this time, it could be different and advantageous for Toronto. It has been reported that the Colorado Avalanche is actually the one struggling with cap issues, which could mean that a top player like Miles Wood could end up on the Maple Leafs’ roster.

Kevin Papetti from The Athletic reports that Wood could be a good fit for teams needing depth and physicality on the left side, and the Maple Leafs do fit the bill.

After losing Tyler Bertuzzi and rumours of Nick Robertson wanting out of Toronto, the Maple Leafs are believed to be seeking for replacements when it comes to grit and speed and Woods could be the perfect candidate, especially since the Avalanche is facing the tough task of freeing up about $11 million in cap space with both Gabriel Landeskog and Valeri Nichushkin possibly returning this season.

This could lead to Wood landing on the trade block. Last summer, he was signed by Colorado to a six-year deal with an AAV of $2.5 million and the fact that he could go down the depth chart as Landeskog looks to return could result in a transaction.

There is just one thing. The Maple Leafs would need to make some moves to fit Wood’s $2.5 million salary under their cap since they only have about $1.275 million available in space right now.

Training camps are starting soon though there is still some time for the Maple Leafs to look into this attractive Wood option. It remains to be seen how Colorado handles the cap challenges ahead and how the possible returns of Landeskog and Nichushkin could have a big impact on the Avalanche’s roster and their chances for a deep playoff run.

The Maple Leafs will surely keep a close eye on it, including on Wood.
