Canucks trade former Round 1 draft pick to rival Oilers
The deal between the two rivals is now official.
Just months after facing one another in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Vancouver Canucks and Edmonton Oilers have come together to complete an offseason trade. Vancouver sent forward Vasily Podkolzin to the Oilers, and in exchange received a fourth-round draft pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft.
Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin thanked Podkolzin for his time with the Canucks shortly after the deal was announced:
“We would like to thank Vasily for his time here with the Canucks,” said Allvin. “Podz put in a lot of work both on and off the ice and we wish him all the best in Edmonton.”
Right now, the Oilers are navigating through a difficult salary cap situation thanks to the offer sheets given by the St. Louis Blues to both Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg.
A native of Moscow, Podkolzin was selected by the Canucks with the 10th overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, and he's split his time between Vancouver and their AHL affiliate Abbotsford Canucks. He's appeared in a total of 137 games with the Canucks, scoring 18 goals with 17 assists.
