Canucks have offered Rick Tocchet a new contract.
The Vancouver Canucks have reportedly made their head coach an offer... an offer that has yet to be accepted.
The Vancouver Canucks have reportedly made their head coach an offer... an offer that has yet to be accepted.
On Monday, National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman revealed his belief that a contract offer has already been put forward by the Vancouver Canucks organization.
"I think they've made Tocchet an offer," revealed Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast. "Obviously that offer didn't get it done."
It sounds like there may be more than just money involved here, with Friedman indicated that the two sides will likely need to sit down at some point to figure out some key things moving forward.
"I think this is a bigger conversation than... does Tocchet wanna stay," said Friedman. "I think there's 2 conversations that are gonna be had here. The number one is the 'Ok where are we going? What do we agree on about our roster? What do we disagree on about our roster? What is our process from here on in?' Number two... some of that is gonna be term and finances."
There's little question that Tocchet is a highly sought after commodity around the National Hockey League with rumors already swirling about a possible link to the Philadelphia Flyers organization even prior to the firing of former Flyers head coach John Tortorella. Friedman seems to acknowledge this by indicating that, should the Canucks want to keep Tocchet, it won't come cheap.
"If they wanna extend Tocchet it's gonna go into a bigger number than they've paid a coach in quite some time," said Friedman. "How do the Canucks feel about that? I think that's gonna be as much the decision for Vancouver as it is gonna be with anything else."
Tocchet of course led the Canucks on an excellent run last season when they gave the Edmonton Oilers all they could handle in the Stanley Cup playoffs, but things took on a very different tone this season with problems in the Canucks locker room eventually leading to the trade of star forward J.T. Miller.
Should the Canucks break the bank to keep Tocchet within the fold? Or would a new voice be a better fit? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
