Canadiens top boss Jeff Gorton outraged over this past weekend.
The Montreal Canadiens were not happy after a tough weekend and that reaches the top levels of the organization.
The Montreal Canadiens are coming off of a tough weekend that featured back to back losses to both the New York Rangers and the Boston Bruins, and it sounds like one of those losses in particular resulted in outrage throughout the organization.
The Canadiens were clearly not happy with the officiating on the ice from National Hockey League referees Kelly Sutherland and Francis Charron on Saturday during their clash against the aforementioned Rangers, something that was made clear during the post game media availability from head coach Martin St. Louis. Although he did so in a relatively subtle manner that would avoid any potential fines from the league, there was no question that St. Louis was slamming the performance of the two aforementioned referees during his post game comments.
Every question that was directed at St. Louis during his post game media scrum, whether the question was delivered in French or in English, resulted in the same response from the Canadiens bench boss.
"I loved our game but I'm not going to talk about the refs," said St. Louis in both English and French regardless of the question that was asked.
It is one thing for a head coach or his players to be upset after a game however, and another matter entirely when one of the top executives in the organization is reportedly losing his cool. On Monday morning, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that even Canadiens executive vice president of hockey operations Jeff Gorton was fuming after the conclusion of the game.
"Some of the reporters I know who were in New York on Saturday told me they had never seen Jeff Gorton that mad," revealed Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast.
In fact the tone and nature of Friedman's comments made it seem like the outburst from St. Louis was very minor when compared to the outrage that was reportedly emmenating from Gorton following the loss on Saturday.
"Marty St. Louis clearly had a message he wanted to deliver post game but people said they had never seen Jeff Gorton that angry after a game before," added Friedman.
Gorton was of course unceremoniously fired by the Rangers in a shocking move that also saw John Davidson, who was the Rangers team president at the time, shown the door and I do wonder if losing to his former team in that manner may have contributed to Gorton's outrage.
One thing seems certain though, the Canadiens were not at all happy with the officiating from Sutherland and Charron over the weekend and I have no doubt that they gave the NHL an earful behind closed doors following the conclusion of that game on Saturday.
