Canada's 4 Nations roster leaked by NHL insiders

The official announcement is expected tomorrow, but we've got the early details.

Trevor Connors

According to a report from NHL insider Chris Johnston of TSN and The Athletic, Team Canada is in for a serious makeover when the puck drops on the NHL's '4 Nations Face-Off' scheduled for February.

Johnston reports that only a "handful of holdovers" will remain on the team from the last time there was 'best on best' international competition at the 2016 World Cup. Sidney Crosby, Brad Marchand and Alex Pietrangelo are expected to be the only returning players for Canada this time around.

So, let's take a look at the full rosters courtesy of Johnston and his inside information:

Forwards

Sidney Crosby
Brad Marchand
Nathan MacKinnon
Connor McDavid
Brayden Point
Mitch Marner
Sam Reinhart
Mark Stone
Brandon Hagel
Sam Bennett
Anthony Cirelli
Travis Konecny

This leaves the likes of Connor Bedard, Macklin Celebrini, Nick Suzuki, Mark Scheifele, Seth Jarvis, Zach Hyman, John Tavares, Tom Wilson, Matt Duchene and Steven Stamkos off the roster.

Defense

Cale Makar
Alex Pietrangelo
Shea Theodore
Devon Toews
Travis Sanheim
Josh Morrissey
Colton Parayko

This leaves Drew Doughty, Evan Bouchard, Noah Dobson, Morgan Rielly, Dougie Hamilton, Owen Power and MacKenzie Weegar off the roster.

Goaltenders

Jordan Binnington
Adin Hill
Samuel Montembeault

Woof... not exactly a ton of depth here. Logan Thompson, Cam Talbot, Stuart Skinner, Marc Andre Fleury and Darcy Kuemper all get passed on according to Johnston.

Looking at the roster as a whole, it's a great team. Maybe the best team in the tournament. Canada certainly boasts some of the best top-end talent in the tournament, but their depth is an issue... particularly in goal and on defence. Removing veterans like Drew Doughty, John Tavares, Steven Stamkos and Marc Andre Fleury is a risk move, as well.

Stay tuned for the official roster unveiling tomorrow afternoon.
