Canada names goaltender for clash against USA on Saturday night.
Team Canada has named their starting goaltender for tonight's game against the United States of America.
We now know who will be backstopping the Canadians at what could turn out to be the biggest game of the Four Nations Face-Off tournament.
According to a report from National Hockey League insider Renaud Lavoie, the Canadians will be sticking with goaltender Jordan Binnington for Saturday night's game against the United States of America. There were some who felt that Binnington's performance in Canada's game against Sweden warranted a change in goal, although it seems head coach John Cooper does not agree with that assessment.
Binnington was rightfully criticized for allowing some questionable goals in regulation however he would bounce back in overtime, making some critical saves for the Canadian side before Mitch Marner would eventually secure the win over the Swedes.
Binnington would finish with 23 saves after facing 26 shots on goal, recording a 2.73 goals against average and a .885 save percentage in the opening game of the tournament.
Given the volume of criticism that was sent in Binnington's direction following that first game against Sweden I suspect there will be plenty who will agree with this latest decision from Canadian head coach John Cooper, with some already expressing their displeasure before the game has even been played.
Should Binnington struggle again in goal for the Canadians on Saturday night that criticism could reach a boiling point, especially if it costs them points, or even the game, against one of their most bitter rivals.
