Earlier this month, Colorado Avalanche star defenseman Cale Makar was selected to be on the cover of the next edition of NHL24, the famous hockey game by EA Sports.

No one was surprised by EA Sports’ pick: Makar has a Stanley Cup ring, a Calder Trophy, as well as the Conn-Smythe and the James-Norris in just fours seasons in the big league, and has put up 246 points in 238 games. The choice came naturally.

However, what does not sound natural to Makar are the comparisons to NHL legend Bobby Orr, even though the young defenseman has yet to even reach his full potential. But Makar does not want anyone to compare him to Orr and bluntly told a reporter during a press conference as he completely disagrees with these statements and wanted to make it clear.

“These comments are completely ridiculous. Being compared to someone like that is insane,” he told ESPN. “For me, it’s hard to fathom. I’m 24, and his career achievements are impossible to match. I’m nowhere near that. It’s true it’s a comparison, but we need to come back to earth a bit.

“When you’re linked to such an athlete, it’s obviously flattering. Nevertheless, I haven’t achieved anything, I’m so young.”

Makar is being quite humble here, seeing that fans know he’s already achieved so much as a young age, but we can appreciate the fact that he does not want to be linked to Orr, who won five Norris trophies between the ages of 22 to 26 with the Boston Bruins and had six consecutive seasons of 100 points or more.

It has to be flattering to be compared to the Great Bobby Orr, however, Makar wants to stay focused and prove to fans out there he deserves to be on the cover of NHL24 this upcoming season.
