The worst case scenario for the New York Rangers took place on Tuesday night in the very tight race for the playoffs out in the Eastern conference. The Blue Shirts are battling for a Wild card spot with the Montreal Canadiens, Columbus Blue Jackets and Detroit Red Wings also in the mix.

Tuesday night was a brutal one for the Rangers, as Larry Brooks of the New York Post put it, seeing that with the Habs’ overtime win over the defending Stanley Cup champions Florida Panthers and the Blue Jackets crushing the Nashville Predators 8-4, both teams got over the Rangers in the standings.

The Jackets have a game in hand, and the Rangers cannot afford to lose too many points in the last stretch of the regular season. They face the Minnesota Wild at the Madison Square Garden later tonight and the two points are mandatory.

The Wild will be ready to fight seeing that they too are fighting for a playoff spot, currently sitting in the last Wild Card spot in the Western conference with the Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks right behind with six and seven points away respectively.

The Habs got their miraculously win last night and we can only imagine the Rangers will be hoping for the same against Minnesota.
