The Boston Bruins have finally done it. On Friday at noon, the team placed veteran forward David Backes on waivers.
The 35-year-old has tallied just one goal and three assists while appearing in just 16 games this season. He was often a healthy scratch in the lineup.
He is currently playing in the fourth year of the five-year, $30 million contract he signed with the team in 2016 and carries a $6 million cap hit. Backes has an eight-team no-trade list for this season and will submit a15-team no-trade list next year.
He ended last season getting scratched a few times, but still managed to record seven goals and 20 points in 70 games with the team last season, adding two goals and five points in 15 playoff games.
In a total of 944 NHLgames, Backes has put up 245 goals and 554 points in his career. He last appeared in an AHL game during the 2006-07 season, before breaking into the league with the St. Louis Blues.
Backes was not the only player put up on the waiver wire on Friday. The Tampa Bay Lightning placed Luke Scheen on waivers.
The veteran defenseman has one goal in 15 games with the Lightning this season. He started the year in the AHL with Tampa’s affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch, before being called up on Oct. 30.
He joined Tampa in the off-season, signing a one-year, league-minimum deal. Schenn signed with the Bolts, his fourth team in three seasons and sixth since being traded by the Maple Leafs in the summer of 2012.
